The Duo Evolving Music – 100 Gecs Album Review

The Duo Evolving Music - 100 Gecs Album Review

Oriane Dancler, Reporter

100 Gecs is an American duo started by Dylan Brady and Laura Les. Starting the duo in 2015,  they came out with their first album 1000 Gecs which was highly received with positive reviews. 100 Gecs’ new album 10,000 Gecs is humourous but in the most intricate ways possible. On the first listen, it sounds like a collection of sounds thrown together, just noise. But on further listens the tracks reveal themselves, not to be just static sound but ever-evolving music.

Dumbest Girl Alive

The song starts with a dramatic movie sounding open. This sound slowly increases and gets louder until transitions into a hard rock beat. The beat consists of a loud guitar melody being interrupted by drums. Moving into the song a classic 100 Gecs techno sound is used to transition into the lyrics. The beat throughout the lyrics stays consistent and is raised or lowered based on the lyrics. The beats throughout the song help drive up the appeal. There are random noises that come out of nowhere but that’s normal for 100 Gecs. The random noises help the song drive its point across.

757

The intro is a techno beat that speeds up and then proceeds to slow down. Going into the lyrics, the sound is a little different from Dumbest Girl Alive because it is hard to tell what the lyrics are saying. With that being said it makes the listener appreciate the beat that was at the beginning. The song then drowns out the beat and puts the lyrics on top. The duo uses autotune throughout the song. The autotune helps with the sound they are trying to accomplish in this song and in every song they make. The beat then becomes fainter to transition to my favorite part of the song. The duo then starts a new beat that sounds like a game failing and then starts to transition to a slower more controlled version of the song. The beat slows down with it and then speeds up toward the end. The end of the song is my favorite part because of the ending transition. The ending is very satisfying in the way they transition it from a sound at the beginning that couldn’t be heard to the lyrics being clear as day in a slower tempo.

Hollywood Baby

Hollywood Baby starts with a hard rock beat with a rocking guitar melody interrupted by drums. The beat then quiets down and transitions into the lyrics. The lyrics start quiet and proceed to transition into the strong beat heard in the beginning. The beat continues to be hype at parts and then transitions into a calmer tone (calm for 100 Gecs). Throughout the song, it continues to transition from a quiet tone to a loud tone. This transition helps brings the song together and is my favorite part throughout the song.

Frog On The Floor

Compared to other songs on the album so far this song starts with just lyrics. The lyrics then transition into someone making a beat with their mouth and then transitioning into the actual beat of the song. The beat can be described as what someone expects kids’ music to sound like. It is simple but makes sense of the song title. The end of the song becomes slowed as well the beat. The beat becomes the sound of tapping drums.  This song is more of a kind of melodic than the hyper pop than the other songs. This song helps show the duo’s diversity of their songs.

Doritors & Fritos

The song starts with what sounds like an electric guitar solo and then transitions into drums. The lyrics start and keep this beat but are a little fainter in the background. The music quiets at parts the artists feels are important to the song. I enjoyed it when the song got quiet and then out of nowhere it starts to speed up and catch the pace of how the song was in the beginning. Intricate parts of the song are shown by quieting the music making it impossible to not enjoy the band singing about Doritos and Fritos

Billy Knows Jamie

The song starts with the lyrics being said as if someone is talking. The song then transitions into a hard rock beat with heavy drums and a medium amount of guitar. The beat throughout stays the same but then at the end becomes an ear-ringing hard rock melody. I am not a big fan of 100 Gecs when they do this deep hard rock beat. I just don’t enjoy it and is always too much for me. I enjoyed the beginning of this song but I could not get passed how hard rock it was.

One Million Dollars

The beat transitions while saying one million dollars the whole time. The beat at the beginning starts up building up to the beat drop. The beat then continues to follow this pattern throughout. One million dollars is said in one tone throughout. The song is comprised of random sounds transitioning into one million dollars. I am very in the middle about how I feel about this song. There isn’t much to go off of and I don’t just like a song because of the beat. It is good to listen to a couple of times but I would never put it in my playlist.

The Most Wanted Person In The United States

This song is the most tamed I’ve heard 100 Gecs at least beat-wise. The beat is a basic 1 and 2 beat tied with a classic whistle tone. The beat also just contains random sounds depending on what the lyrics are. The sound quiets at times to allow the listener to hear the lyrics even more. I enjoyed this song but it wasn’t anything special. I simply just enjoyed other songs on the album better but I appreciate the calmness of the beat even if the lyrics aren’t tamed.

I Got My Tooth Removed

A new theme is provided in this song which is sadness/pain (in the beginning). The song starts off with lyrics that contributed to a sad guitar melody. The song then speeds up into a low drum with trumpets. Trumpets are then contributed throughout the song while the drum beats may turn off. The beat will also stop from time to time to emphasize the lyrics. The end of the song transitions into the beginning of the song and then outro the loud trumpet sounds of before. This song is fun and goofy I could listen to it just for the laughs.

Mememe

The song starts with the music of an ice cream truck with a techno beat. The opening then transitions into the song where the techno beat continues but the ice cream truck sound is washed out. The song then goes into a slower 1 and 2 techno beat. These transitions continue throughout the song depending on the lyrics. My favorite part of the song is when the duo talks over the beat instead of singing. It helps draw the audience into what is going on. The different tones throughout the song help make the song my favorite.

Album Ranking: 9.5/10

I was genuinely  shocked at how much I liked this album. I enjoyed the different beats and random noises throughout the songs even the ones that weren’t one of my favorites. 100 Gecs helps me look at music differently and this album helped establish that. Even though there are no meaningful lyrics the songs are still enjoyable throughout every listen. My favorite song on the album was 727 just because the end was so enticing to me. I also really enjoyed Mememe it was the first song on the album I added to my playlist. My least favorite is One Million Dollars just because the hard rock beat is a lot. I tried to enjoy it but I just couldn’t. I highly recommend listening to Frog On The Floor because of the calmness if this is the first time listening to 100 Gecs. In general, I highly recommend listening to 757 and Mememe because they are my favorite.
