Mitchell Heading to Cleveland

After finishing the 2021-22 regular season with a 49-33 record, the Utah Jazz landed themselves a playoff spot as 5th in the Western Conference. However, the Dallas Mavericks ended their season in the first round after beating them in six games. Since then, the Jazz have had a pretty interesting offseason.

The Utah Jazz are in rebuilding mode and started to trade their star players to receive picks to jump-start the rebuild. Utah traded Rudy Gobert to the Timberwolves for Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt and four first round picks, although they soon traded Beverly to the Lakers for Talen Horton Tucker and Stanley Johnson. Although this trade worked very well for the Jazz, they still wanted to trade Donovan Mitchell, and after many discussions with other teams, they finally did.

A few weeks after the Gobert trade, the Jazz completed a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers to trade Mitchell in exchange for Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, and Ochai Agbaji, along with three more first round picks and two pick swaps.

Last year, the Cavs ended the season with a record of 44-38 and were the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference, although they were beaten by the Nets in the Play-In. The Cavs’ are a young team led by Evan Mobley, Kevin Love, along with their two all-stars Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen.

This past season was a breakout season for both Garland and Allen. Last season Garland averaged more than 20 points a game and recorded three more assists and one more rebound than his previous season, while Allen averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists, along with one block per game. With the new addition of Donovan Mitchell, the Cavs may end up being a top five seed in the Eastern Conference.

Mitchell ended last season averaging 26 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals per game. This trade works well for both teams, since the Jazz wanted to trade their stars in order to tank for better picks in the coming drafts while the young Cavaliers team received yet another all-star who can hopefully help lead them further into the playoffs.
