For the past two months, John Adams students have been putting together Legally Blonde Jr. The Musical. The director of the show is John Adams junior Emily Thornburg, who helped assemble the cast, props, and choreography. Mrs. Ducharme, choir director at Adams and Mr. Spiess, the teachers’ assistant teacher, have both helped Thornburg with the show. Before rehearsals began, auditions were open for anyone who wanted to be a part of the cast. Thornburg and her team and an exclusive environment by not having weight on the talent, but rather having a focus on the effort Once auditions concluded, they made final decisions and released the cast list to the public. The three main characters in the play are Warner Hungington III, Emmet Forest and Elle Woods. These characters are going to be played, in order, by Kevin Walubita, Chance Williams and Sophie Yazel.
The big three were interviewed after one of their rehearsals and have a lot to say about their personal experiences, behind the scenes and their favorite memories while at rehearsal. Chance Williams, who plays the dorky Emmet Forest and waiter, explained that he had fun getting to know the cast and hanging out with them on and off set. “When we first met, we instantly clicked. We became a really close family”, Chance explained. Williams also helped choreograph the song, “What You Want” in the musical and taught the cast how to shine on the stage. Sophie Yazel, who plays the pink of the show Elle Woods, shared that preparing for the show took a lot of hard work and dedication. She also shared that she unfortunately caught pneumonia a few weeks ago and couldn’t sing nor come to rehearsals. “We had a few setbacks here and there, but the cast managed to pull their socks together.” Finally, Kevin Walubita, who plays the rich playboy Warner Hungington III and the leader of the frat boys, Grandmaster Chad, shared that his favorite memory during rehearsals was when he was singing his song, “Serious” his voice cracked and everyone thought it was so funny. “It was my first time singing in a very long time, probably since the sixth grade. When the voice creak happened, I was so embarrassed but I also found it really funny at the same time, and so did the whole cast.” Walubita also explained that he enjoyed getting close to Chance Williams off set and building a brotherhood with him. “I see Chance as my younger brother at this point. We both have the same goals and I really enjoy spending time with him on and off set. I look up to him when it comes to our talents, and take inspiration from the guy.” The cast have had such an amazing experience during the past few weeks and can’t wait to show the community what they have been working on. The tickets for Legally Blonde Jr. are ten dollars each and showtimes are Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. and Saturday Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. We hope that the cast has fun and breaks their legs!c
