This past Saturday, Saint Joseph High School hosted John Adams and ten other schools for the regional Quiz Bowl state qualifier. The two teams representing Adams finished second and third, qualifying the program for the state finals at Purdue University, as well as qualifying two teams for the NAQT Nationals for the first time in school history. Nationals will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, at the end of the school year.
To qualify for state finals, teams must either reach the finals at their regional tournament or score high enough to receive a wildcard spot. The Eagles, with the largest roster in the state, brought two teams to compete for qualification. The morning round consisted of two pools of round-robin play, in which the Eagle’s A team went undefeated, and the B team went 4-2, losing close matches to Saint Joe’s A team and Culver Academies’ team, who would go on to win the tournament overall. With these results, the A team was seeded first and the B team fourth going into the afternoon knockout stages.
After successful matches in the early rounds of afternoon play for both Adams teams, in which the B team secured a comeback victory against St. Joe’s A team, the Eagle’s A and B teams faced off in the semifinals. The A team secured their spot in the finals, led by Senior Michael Camilleri who put together a series of impressive performances throughout the day. After a close first half, the Eagles lost momentum in the final, falling to a stellar Culver Academies team. Despite the loss, the Adams team will proceed to state.
On February 7 Adams will host the end of season league tournament, a competition in which they secured the top seed and bye match because of their undefeated league season.
With the outcomes from Saturday, Adams Quiz Bowl can begin preparation for the state finals on March 2, and ultimately for the national competition on Memorial Day weekend. The team will be hosting a Trivia Night on March 22 to raise funds for the trip to Atlanta. The event will be available to students, teachers, family and friends.
