Notre Dame Struggled in Opener, but is There Hope?

For any Notre Dame football fan, the season opener against Louisville was less than appealing. The first half for the Irish was abysmal, only leading by seven against a team who finished 2-10 last year. The defense could not stop Louisville’s option offense in the first half, which could be troublesome when the Irish play Georgia, who is known for being a rushing powerhouse. Ian Book, who has been extremely hyped prior to this season, did not seem comfortable in the pocket, and showed weaknesses by overthrowing targets and having poor ball security. Luckily for the Irish, the second half was far better, allowing only three points while also scoring 14 of their own. This resulted in the final score being 35-17, making the Irish 1-0. Looking forward to the next 11 games of the season, Notre Dame has a fairly easy schedule. The two most worrisome games on the schedule are Georgia and Michigan. Athens, Georgia and Ann Arbor, Michigan are two of the hardest locations to play college football. Georgia’s quarterback, Jake Fromm, is very skilled, and the main reason that the Bulldogs beat the Irish in 2017. Notre Dame will surely be looking for revenge, but it will not be easy. Georgia will be lethal from the running game and through the air. Michigan is not nearly as scary, especially after their near loss to Army this past weekend. If Notre Dame cannot correct their errors from the Louisville game, both games could be heartbreaking for Irish fans. Hopefully, those errors can be corrected, and the Irish can at least take down the Wolverines. Looking at the season so far, it is fair to think that the Irish will finish with only one or two losses, hopefully leading to a potential “New Year’s Six” bowl game. Only time will tell, but the future could be bright for Notre Dame football.
