An exchange year is often a great experience for young people. The opportunity to experience a different culture, make new friends and grow personally is priceless. Such a change brought both challenges and adventures for me during my year at a high school in the USA.
I come from Germany and I was excited to start my exchange year in the United States. With a mix of anticipation and nervousness, I embarked on the journey. But when I arrived in South Bend, Indiana, I was warmly welcomed by my host family.
The first day at my new high school was exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Everything was different, from the classrooms to the lockers, from the school subjects to the school system itself. But I was determined to adapt and make the most of my experience.
The language difference was initially a challenge. Although I had learned English in school, it was a completely different thing to be in an environment where English was the dominant language. But over time, my understanding of the language improved and I began to express myself more confidently.
One of the most remarkable experiences for me was the diversity of cultures and backgrounds I encountered in high school. I met students from different parts of the US as well as from other countries like Venezuela, Mexico and even France and Finland as there were several exchange students here this year.
Sports plays a big role in high schools in America, and I decided to join the soccer team. Being on the team helped me quickly meet new people and make some friends. The soccer season was one of the funniest and most beautiful moments this year for me as it is my favorite sport and my teammates were very funny and nice. The time after school, during training or at a meeting was always very entertaining with my team.
In addition to the academic and sports life, there were also numerous excursions with my host parents, which I have always enjoyed very much and am very grateful to see many parts of the country besides the school.
As my exchange year comes to an end, I am grateful for the experiences I have had. Not only did I improve my English and develop a deeper understanding of American culture, but I also made valuable friendships.
For me, my exchange year at an American high school was more than just a school year abroad. It was a journey of self-discovery, cultural enrichment and friendships across borders. It was an experience that changed my life forever.
