Ever since the Chicago Bears lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the 2006-2007 Super Bowl, they have been widely considered to be one of the worst franchises in the NFL. Aside from a few decent seasons in the late 2010’s, they have had very little success, finishing last in their division numerous times.
This past season, the Bears once again finished last in the division, with a record of 7-10. However, they showed many signs of future success, mainly from the defense, which became one of the league’s best by the end of the season.
Unfortunately for Bears fans across the country, they decided to trade Justin Fields for a future sixth round pick, unless Fields plays well in Pittsburgh, in which case the pick will switch to a fourth rounder. However, they have made many good moves this off-season as well. For instance, they picked up D’Andre Swift, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last year and scored five touchdowns. Additionally, they signed Keenan Allen, who finished the season with over 1,200 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. The Bears also re-signed Jaylon Johnson, who was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL last year. Another one of Chicago’s biggest issues last season was their offensive line, which has been bad for years. However, they have signed new lineman, who will hopefully protect the Bears new quarterback.
With the Justin Fields trade finalized, the Bears have essentially confirmed that they will be taking Caleb Williams with the number one pick in the draft. Much of the Bear’s future is riding on Caleb Williams now. If he is unable to lead the Bear’s new offense, then all of their recent signings will have been for nothing. The Bears have the ninth pick this year as well, which they may use to pick up Washington’s Rome Odunze, who was one of the NCAA’s best wide receivers last year.
Although it has been said before, with little success, the Bears have potential to be one of the most well-rounded teams next year. They now have one of the league’s best receiving corps, led by Keenan Allen and DJ Moore, as well as one of the best running backs in the NFL in D’Andre Swift. At the end of last season, the Bears had one of the best defenses, specifically against rushing offenses.
