Snow is falling and it is the time of year to sit down with a cup of hot chocolate and watch a Christmas movie. There are a variety of different subgenres to choose from within the genre of Christmas movies, but sometimes it does get difficult to narrow it down and choose the best. For those looking for magical Christmas movies to add to the mix, here are a few wonderful choices.
First and foremost, there are the classic Christmas comedies. Whether you have not seen them in awhile, watch them every year, or have never seen them before, Christmas comedies are the perfect way to pass a snowy evening. You may find yourself watching Elf, the story of a human named Buddy (played by Will Ferrell) that grows up in Santa’s workshop thinking that he is an elf, before he travels to New York to meet his real father. There is also the timeless Home Alone in which an eight-year-old kid named Kevin is accidentally left behind when his family goes to Paris for Christmas break. Kevin then has to defend his house from sinister robbers. Another classic is The Santa Clause in which a man named Scott accidentally causes Santa Claus to fall off of his roof and is then forced to become the next Santa.
There are also a multitude of comforting Christmas romance movies. One fantastic Christmas rom-com called While You Were Sleeping is about a woman named Lucy (played by Sandra Bullock) who saves the man that she has had a crush on for years, but never talked to, from getting hit by a train after he is hit unconscious and accidentally falls onto the subway tracks. When Lucy is at the hospital the man’s family shows up, and due to a miscommunication, they are led to believe that Lucy is the man’s fiancee. In addition, there are an infinite amount of Hallmark movies to watch. They can be a little bit cliche, but that does not mean that you cannot enjoy watching them as a not-so-guilty pleasure. If you have never watched a Hallmark movie, you should watch at least one to understand all the fuss about them. Netflix also has a selection of Christmas romance movies such as The Noel Diary, A Christmas Prince, A Castle for Christmas, and Dash & Lilly.
Another enchanting genre of Christmas films is Christmas dramas. You may consider sitting down to watch Last Christmas, which is about the transformation of a girl named Kate. Kate starts out as a selfish person, seemingly at her wit’s end, but she meets a guy named Tom who teaches her how to become a generous, caring person. Little Women is an emotional drama that is perfect for watching in the winter weather. Although not specifically intended to be a Christmas movie, Little Women starts off in the Christmas season, and there are plenty of winter-esque scenes. Little Women tells the story of four sisters as they grow up in Victorian New England. This movie is ideal to watch with a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa. One of the most classic Christmas dramas of all time is It’s A Wonderful Life, the story of a man who is considering suicide due to his feelings of being unimportant and meaningless. Before he can follow through with his suicide, an angel comes to him and shows what his town would be like if he was never born and never able to do all of the kind things that he had done thus far in his life.
Watching Christmas movies is a terrific way to spend the Christmas season. There are too many Christmas movies to count, so there is no need to stay freezing out in the cold during Christmas time when you can relax, cozy up, and enjoy a cheery Christmas movie instead.
