On Tuesday, Nov. 14, South Bend mayor James Mueller made an exciting announcement, revealing the upcoming Downtown Plan. The Downtown Plan, confirmed to start in 2024, is a monumental $1 billion investment in order to create substantial improvements in the downtown South Bend area. This significant financial development plan sourced from multiple projects across the community, including the main contributor, the Beacon Tower Project.
The new investment has the potential to redefine and elevate the downtown South Bend area in numerous aspects. “We’re looking at plans to make sure that we are the center of commerce, good jobs, more jobs,” said Mueller.
In addition to the announcement of the Downtown Plan, some of the proposals are already taking place, including the renovation of 500 vacant homes and apartments across the South Bend community..
However, the housing in downtown South Bend is not the only thing that will be improved. Alongside the residency, the Downtown Plan extends to the amenities and cultural side of the city. Several well-known institutions of South Bend such as the Morris Performing Arts Center, the Housing Authority, the Century Center and Four Winds Field are all benefiting from the Downtown Plan as it offers crucial investments for improving the South Bend experience.

While the full timeline of when the Downtown Plan will be put into action have not been revealed to the public, he project is already in full preparation as the end of 2023 approaches.
