Deborah “Joie” Warnke is a smart and talented senior at Adams. She is heavily involved within the Adams community and loves to pour her time, energy and creativity into many of the programs Adams has to offer. Joie has spent all four of her high school years at Adams and is one of the top students in her class. She has participated in Marching Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Girls Golf, Newspaper, and Mock Trial. Her favorite teachers are Mr. Graham and Mr. Bart.
Joie grew up in South Bend but also spent a lot of her life in Saint Joseph, Michigan, where her creativity and passion for life began to grow through extracurriculars and clubs. Joie attended LaSalle Middle School, where she met many people with whom she is still friends with to this day. Joie said a big part of her childhood was, “participating in sports… such as softball, basketball and golf allowed me to develop adequate communication skills, discipline, and how to be passionate for the activities I love doing.” Joie was awarded the Rising Star of Indiana award for her high performing academics during her Junior year and has received two awards as a musician and was voted “most improved” on the golf team
Joie’s favorite activity is playing the saxophone; she has been a member of John Adams’ highest level jazz band since her sophomore year. Joie loves the creative aspect of jazz music and she feels the most creative when she solos during musical pieces. She was also one of the John Adams Marching Band’s drum majors this year and played a large role in the club’s leadership team. Joie’s fascination with music stretches far beyond the school’s band: “I wish people knew and understood my passion for music, just because it is so deep and profound.”
Joie is even a part of a combination jazz group with other Adams students. This group has played for many public events, including a South Bend Community School Corporation staff conference. She is the lead saxophonist of the group and is one of the co-creators as well. She loves this because she can express her creativity through jazz music while hanging around her closest friends.
After High School, Joie intends to go to college and study jazz at either Michigan State or Ball State and continue working with music for the rest of her life. After college, she plans to open a jazz club with her friends in either Chicago or New York. Joie is a kind and committed individual who is always there for her friends and family and loves them dearly.
