After the exciting end to the 2022-2023 NBA season, the 2023 off-season was extremely eventful. As the summer winds down, fans and analysts are eagerly discussing the top trades and signings that have substantially reshaped the league. These transactions have left fans in intense anticipation, waiting for a season like no other before it. The 2023 off-season has set the stage for possibly one of the most unforgettable seasons of all time.
One of the most surprising acquisitions, that took place soon after the end of last season, was the trade that sent Chris Paul to the Golden State Warriors. Throughout the 14 seasons in which Chris Paul and Steph Curry both played in the NBA, their rivalry was known throughout the league. However, both players, as well as Warriors fans, were seemingly excited when the trade was finalized. One problem that may have led to some issues in past seasons for the Golden State Warriors was the lack of a backup facilitator. The addition of Chris Paul on their roster fixes this issue, as he will play the role of the sixth man this coming season. Considering his age, he is coming off an impressive scoring season, in which he averaged 14 points per game, and his defense, specifically his ability to cause takeaways will help lead to many fast break opportunities for the Warriors. However, over the course of his last few seasons, his points per game have clearly declined and he is injury prone. This should not be too big of a problem for the Warriors as he will receive less minutes coming off of the bench and will not have a major scoring role. Although this trade was not necessarily vital to the success of the team this coming year, it will definitely help in making sure that the offense runs smoothly.
Another surprising acquisition that took place in this trade was the transfer of Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns. This was one of the more questionable trades, as Beal’s playstyle does not fill any holes on the Sun’s roster. The Suns already have two of the most proficient scorers in the NBA in Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Although his scoring stats have remained relatively consistent throughout the last couple seasons, it really just was not necessary for the Suns. Due to the loss of Chris Paul, they needed a young guard with the ability to pass and create opportunities for his teammates to score. Beal, for his entire career, has been the leading scorer on his team, and has only had average stats in terms of assists. On top of that, like Chris Paul, he is injury prone, and unfortunately misses many important games throughout the season. That said, the Suns now have three experienced scorers who, when healthy, may be able to overwhelm opposing defenses.
Victor Wembanyama was the first pick in the 2023 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, which surprised no one. He was one of the most, if not the most, hyped prospects of all time, rivaling Lebron James. He stands at 7 feet 4 inches, which means he is a dominant defender and finisher, but he is also a very skilled shooter and playmaker. Many NBA fans have stated that his offense is similar to Kevin Durants. The only problem that fans have found with him is his light weight for his weight and position. Many other centers in the league proportionally weigh more than he does despite being much shorter than him. However, this is likely to change throughout his career, as you can see with Giannis, who as a rookie, was also very skinny. The acquisition of Wembanyama by the Spurs will definitely help them in the coming years, assuming that they are successful in building the rest of their team around him. Besides Wembanyama, there are other young players with potential on the Spurs, and if they all develop their skills, the Spurs may be one of the best teams in the NBA in the near future.
For a large majority of the last season, the Boston Celtics were the number one seed in the Eastern Conference, and although they lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Miami Heat, they showed the NBA community that they were a team to be reckoned with. During this past off-season, they made a few changes that will make them better than last year. After trading Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies, they acquired Jrue Holiday in a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers, in return for Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and two future first-round picks. Jrue Holiday has a very similar playstyle to Marcus Smart, the difference being that he is better than Smart in almost every category. Holiday is one of the best two-way guards in the league, and last year, on the Bucks, he showed his offensive prowess as well, averaging nearly 20 points per game. Additionally, the Celtics received Kristaps Porziņģis, a 7 foot 2 inch center with the ability to shoot the ball from beyond the three point line. Throughout all of these trades, the Celtics managed to keep their hands on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who both averaged 26+ points per game last season. Due to this, the Celtics are in the running for the best team in the NBA.
For the last few seasons, Damian Lillard has been looking to leave Portland with the hopes of finding a successful team that could help him win a championship, after leading the Trail Blazers for so many years. Many fans thought that he would end up in Miami, and he came close throughout last season, but the trade never ended up happening. Instead, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks this past off-season, which put the rest of the league on notice. The Bucks managed to keep all of their star players this off-season, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, who once again, was in the running for MVP last year, and averaged 25 points per game, 12 rebounds per game, and two steals per game. Last year, Lillard averaged 32 points per game and seven assists per game. Additionally, the Bucks still have Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez, who are both proficient alternate scoring options. Now, with the addition of Lillard, the Buck’s offense will be incredible, and will force defenses to make a choice between focusing on Giannis in the paint or focusing on Lillard from beyond the three point line. Both of these stars are capable of dropping 40 points in a game at any given moment, which makes this team scary. Due to these new acquisitions, the Bucks are likely to finish the season within the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference, as they will have to fight the Celtics for the top spot.
