The soccer sectional games for the Varsity team this year started on Oct. 26. The first game in the sectional tournament was against Riley.
The game started and directly in the first few minutes you could see that our varsity team was better than riley. We started very well in the game and scored after the first five minutes. After the first goal, our varsity team scored more and more. John Adams varsity was much better than Riley in every minute of the game. The game went more to a practice game for our varsity team and ended with a score of 7-0.
Because of the win against Riley on Oct. 26 our team qualified for the next game against Penn on Oct. 27.
The team expected that the second game would be more of a challenge than the first game and losing would mean their season is over. Adams started with more concentration and more passion in this game, they showed all the hard work of the season and played one of the best games of their season. The game started very exciting and interesting, Adams played well in the first half of the game with some scoring chances and a strong defense, but they were never able to score, the first half ended 0-0.
The second half started the same way as the first, with both teams playing a passionate game. With thirty minutes left in the game and we got a perfect pass from the midfield to our striker, he tried to pass the goalkeeper from Penn but got fouled during the attempt. The referee called for a penalty shot and the striker Mateo Juarez scored, making the score 1-0 John Adams. After this Penn knew they had to score or the sectionals would be over for them. Penn played with more pressure but our defense was strong enough to hold them back. After ten minutes of defending, the referee gave Penn an unwarranted penalty. Unfortunately they scored and the score was tied 1-1. This score stuck until time ended and the game went into extra time.
In extra time both teams played well but both knew if they made one mistake it could mean the end of their season. The first half of the overtime, despite being intense, ended without either team scoring. The second half was more of a fight against tiredness to win this game. Near the end of the second half of overtime Penn got a freekick in front of our goalkeeper Eric and couldn’t do anything to save the kick. After this Adams tried to press to score a quick goal but unfortunately Penn got another freekick and scored after a long ball to the striker in front of the goal-keeper.
The John Adams Varsity team lost 3-1 against Penn in the sectional semifinals. They played one of their best games in the season but it wasn’t enough to stay in the sectional. The loss meant that Adams was out of the playoffs and their season was over.
