Nakayla Scales, a determined and hard-working senior, looks forward to enjoying the remainder of her senior year. As a busy yet driven student, she is involved in many extracurricular activities, including the National Honors Society (NHS,) and the John Adams Volunteer Association (JAVA,) as well as being a volunteer at the hospital. Additionally, she is the vice president of the International Student Organization (ISO) and co-captain for Science Olympiad.
Growing up, Nakayla moved around several times and has lived in a plethora of places: Washington D.C., Louisiana and most recently South Bend. Despite the fact that traveling around and continuous change can be difficult, growing up has been fairly manageable for her because her parents have given all she has needed. Her parents have always been a huge part of her life, and she aims to achieve the same level of success that they have (as well as Beyoncé’s success.) She describes herself as, “friendly, supportive and driven,” and her close friends would describe her as, “helpful, attentive and eccentric.” From a young age, Nakayla took interest in traveling and puzzles. Other hobbies she has include watching horror movies and collecting vinyl records.
During her time at Adams, Nakayla has challenged herself by taking rigorous courses as a full International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidate. Her favorite class these past four years has been IB Spanish, with Señora Stanton being her favorite teacher. Her favorite memory has been meeting so many amazing new people during her years here. Before she graduates, she wants to fully enjoy her last year of high school.
Her academic plan is to obtain the IB diploma, enroll at Notre Dame and go on a pre-med career path through majoring in neurology, as well as Spanish. After that, she aspires to become a neurosurgeon or neurologist and settle down in Charlotte, North Carolina. Another personal goal of hers is traveling the world.
She advises all students to, “enjoy every moment of high school, as it is a fleeting experience. There is so much beauty in the life around you, whether it is in the people or the experiences, so do your best to cherish it.” The Tower wishes Nakayla a joyful rest of her senior year with fulfilling experiences and many successes!
