Haven Murphy

As a senior at John Adams, Haven Murphy wants to make her second and last year with The Tower count. Haven is excited for the vast writing and documentation opportunities the newspaper will bring, considering she may not have much time to when she’s busy studying pediatric neuroscience and nursing. However, when she isn’t worrying about any deadlines–or procrastinating–Haven enjoys thrifting, dancing, reading, watching movies and TV with her best friend Sydney and listening to music. Her favorite genres of music are pop, avant-garde, metal, indie and late ’90s/early 2000s R&B–most of her favorites being too old to tour. Even though she takes longer than it should to read through them–prioritizing her natural pace, she loves superhero comics, historical fiction and social commentary novels.

Haven often integrates her interests into her articles, especially about the history of music and film. Any opportunity she gets, she’s watching a new movie–whether it’s a Saturday superhero rerun before work or a late night at the cinema with her best friend. Sometimes, Haven feels so connected with a movie to the point where she must share her analysis or random knowledge of the production. Being a writer for the newspaper creates an outlet for this artistic connection! The same adoration she has for art carries into her journalism for The Tower

Haven uses her creativity to convey her ideas, interests and perspectives on certain aspects of life and what’s happening in the world. As a result of her reserved and quiet nature, public speaking isn’t exactly her strong suit. So, her writing confidently conveys her ideas and perspectives on any events–which is one of the many reasons why writing for The Tower was worth coming back for a second year. Occasionally feeling like a Daily Planet journalist is pretty worth it too. In addition to confidently expressing her thoughts and opinions, having the ability to be an accessible outlet and share news, creative history and anything else to her friends and community creates a sense of pride in being a part of The Tower.
