2022 VMAs Recap
September 9, 2022
From iconic album announcements to slightly strange couples’ sightings and surprise celebrity attendees, the 2022 VMAs will surely go down in the books as a crazy year.
There were many exciting wins at the VMAs this year. Harry Styles won Album of the Year for Harry’s House, Bad Bunny won Artist of the Year, and Billie Eilish won Song of the Year for “Happier Than Ever”. Although these wins were memorable, nothing quite topped Taylor Swift’s triumph. While accepting her award for best long-form video “All Too Well” (10 min version), Swift announced her new upcoming album Midnights (due to come out Oct 21, 2022), shocking “Swifties” around the globe. Not only was Taylor Swift a surprise guest at the VMAs this year, but she was also possibly the cutest friend and hype woman attending, as she was having a blast dancing to Nicki Minaj
Swifties were not the only people shocked at the VMAs this year. It’s practically impossible to have missed the sighting of this unexpected couple: 42-year-old Sheri Easterling (most commonly known as Addison Rae’s mother) and 26-year-old Young Gravy. In their TikTok videos, the two have been flirting a lot recently, but both of them going to the VMAs together seemed totally unrealistic. Not only were they each other’s dates to the VMAs, but they were also seen kissing twice: one on the red carpet and once during performances. There is no telling whether this is true love between the two or just a Public Relations stunt. Would Sheri really date someone so young when she has a daughter almost the same age as her date?
While giving her acceptance speech for Best New Artist, Dove Cameron gave a lovely shoutout to all the LGBTQ+ audience that has supported her and helped her in “getting an overtly queer song onto mainstream radio”. She expressed her total awe and gratefulness for this fact and explained how important and meaningful the award was for her.
Other memorable moments of the night include when Lil Nas X took a fan’s “BeReal”, Johnny Depp’s first public appearance since the infamous Depp vs. Amber Heard trial, Lizzo’s extremely hype acceptance speech, and Jack Harlow and Fergie’s iconic duet of the song “Glamorous.”
