Born in Chicago, Kalen Allen, a 6’1 combo guard for the John Adams boys’ basketball team, is also a rising Instagram fashion influencer and a devoted Christian. In his words, “these are the things that bring me peace in life.” Often known for how he carries himself on and off the court, Allen credits his faith, fashion, and basketball as key elements to keeping him grounded and focused.
Having grown up in a Christian household, faith has always been a significant part of Kalen’s life. From guiding him through life’s hardships to giving him the strength and ability to pursue the things he loves, Christ is the one he’s most grateful for. At the end of 2024, Kalen was baptized, marking a major milestone in his journey. After growing up firmly believing in Jesus, this moment is a powerful affirmation of his belief. “Jesus is the number one most important thing in my life. …I wouldn’t be able to do the things I love without him,” he says.
Kalen was raised and began his basketball career here in South Bend. Allen made a name for himself in the South Bend high school basketball scene quickly as a versatile guard, recognized for his scoring ability, defense, and leadership on the floor. He attributes his start the roots of his early hoop journey to his experiences with his former club teams, JCB Elite and Indiana Elite.
Kalen’s high school basketball career started at Career Academy, where he led his team with an average of 13.7 points per game. After three years at Career, he transferred to Adams for his senior year. Reflecting on his experience at Career, he says the highlights include getting to play alongside his childhood friends and the school gym being packed on game day. His brief time with the Eagles has been equally as memorable, with his personal highlight being the team’s 8-0 start to the season as well as the packed out gyms on game day.
Off the court, Kalen’s passion for fashion has also become a defining part of his identity. Whether he’s dressing up for school or putting together a photoshoot outfit, his style is a blend of comfort and creativity, adding another layer to who he is beyond the game. To him, “it’s like another escape for me, I look at it as more of an art. I want to become a model as well so this is helping me become a model [in the future].”
Though he hasn’t fully decided on what’s next after graduation, Kalen is considering either majoring in fashion design or communication, while also working to take his athletics to the next level. He plans to use his time in college to develop his love for basketball alongside his interest in fashion. As he hones his skills on the court, Kalen also plans to grow his social media presence, showcasing fashion sense and personality with the goal of eventually booking modeling jobs. In addition to expanding his social audience for modeling opportunities, he is also committed to becoming a professional basketball player. Kalen sees college as a necessary time to build a strong foundation in both fields, setting him up for a successful future.
Kalen’s knowledge and personality comes out particularly in his advice for underclassmen, “Keep your head on straight all four years,” he advises. “It’s easy to get off track [in high school]. Stay focused on your goals and make the most of your high school experience.” Kalen’s advice isn’t about avoiding challenges or shortcuts, but about developing mental strength and staying balanced. He often reflects on his own experiences, noting how difficult it was at times to stay motivated, but how important it was to push through distractions and setbacks. For him, the key is balance – keeping a clear vision of what you want, while also allowing room for the unexpected moments that shape who you are.
The Tower congratulates Kalen and the class of 2025 on all they’ve accomplished and wish them the best on their new adventure!
