As we become familiar with the cold once again, it is vital now, more than ever, to prioritize a positive transition that will fulfill our mind and soul. Denmark has celebrated a tradition known as hygge (hoo-ga) since around 1800, and it embodies the most beautiful of ways to find oneself amidst the decay of this season.
The Danish word literally translates to “enjoy” in English, though historically the holiday is of Norwegian descent. Regardless of origin, I find the definition summarizes the celebration in full. Hygge represents a period of comfort and enjoyment, a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
To delve further into this tradition, note that there are ten principles of hygge: atmosphere, presence, pleasure, equality, gratitude, harmony, comfort, truce, togetherness, and shelter. Expanding on this idea, I believe it’s not only helpful but absolutely necessary to embrace each of those principles in order to seek solace amidst the impending frost. A comprehensive list of ways to achieve each concept is as follows:
Atmosphere: Turn down those ceiling lights, consider investing in a lamp or two, and light some candles- the warmer the better!
Presence: It is essential to make time unplugged from your devices and to engage in mindful habits that ground you in the moment.
Pleasure: Indulge in things that make you happy, from foods and treats to movies and music. Set aside some space for the little pleasures!
Equality: Share the love around the house, whether it be in helping with chores or making dinner!
Gratitude: Take a moment to observe all it is you have, and find thanks for it all- in the season of Thanksgiving, this is crucial!
Harmony: Though it’s easy to get too focused on your own doings, make a space for everyone in your life this hygge season
Comfort: One of the most important staples of hygge, comfort can be curling up in a blanket, reading a new book, eating comfort food, or watching your favorite movie. It’s entirely dependent on what makes you feel cozy!
Truce: Try not to get too absorbed in drama or conflict, your energy is better spent on positive influences rather than negative.
Togetherness: A common theme throughout all of these principles, togetherness means simply existing with the people you love most! Friends, family, partners- there should be a strong sense of community with the people you surround yourself with.
Shelter: It’s pertinent to have a shelter, an area you can flock to when you need time to yourself. This could be your room, your living room, your friends’ house- anywhere you feel safe and comfortable can be your shelter.
By following these principles, you’re sure to find yourself rested and at ease as the seasons transition and the snow begins to fall. Personally, I like to invest in new cd’s and records for my room, and solve puzzles with my family on dark evenings! However you choose to celebrate, make the most of this time of hygge, and learn to enjoy the little things.
