Have you ever watched something that left a bad taste in your mouth or made your eyes roll to the back of your head? That’s how I felt watching comedian Tony Hinchcliffe make tone-deaf jokes during President, and felon, Donald J Trump’s rally on Oct 28. During this racist spill he called ¨comedy,¨ Hinchcliffe said many derogatory things about Latinos, Jewish people and African American individuals. While he claimed these to be “jokes,” they were more racist stereotypes. One of Hinchcliffe’s more notable jokes was referring to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, as garbage: “There’s a lot going on. Like, I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
This caused Puerto Rican singer and rapper, Bad Bunny to early vote and endorse Kamala Harris to undecided voters after viewing the hateful clip. Tuesday 10/29 TKAM Pre-Reading #2 to Billboard Magazine, Bad Bunny said: “At the end of the day, everybody in Puerto Rico knows who the clear option is. The Puerto Rican people are not brute, they are not dumb.”
Though his subtle encouragement did not work, this was huge for a celebrity to make his political opinions known. No matter your political beliefs, you can clearly see this was inappropriate. This is bigger than just red or blue, what does this say about Americans and Republicans? I should be able to equally choose what qualities I want from each candidate, however, for the last nine years, I feel as though I’m picking the default option. The problem is not the Republican party, it’s the racist homophobia and sexism spewing from it. These jokes were hateful and unprofessional, especially as a comedian. This was embarrassing for all of us as a country, no matter how someone presents themselves, that does not deter voters. Not only does policy not matter, but character does too and no matter how hateful it was, not a lot of people were persuaded to change their vote. Even when people such as Cardi B, Bad Bunny and a former President and First Lady endorse Kamala Harris, people still believe Donald Trump was the best candidate. According to NBC News, Latino men were the second highest race that voted for Trump, at 55%. At the end of the day we can all agree this is not good for Trump’s presidency, as well as the Republican party.
