Shootings have been plaguing the American school system for over two decades. After the recent threats against John Adams, and others in the county, the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) has taken steps to make the school more safe. One of those newly installed elements are metal detectors. After interviewing Mr. Adams, Dean of Students at Adams, we received more clarity on the situation.
Q: How do you think the metal detectors are increasing safety at Adams?
Mr. Adams: “I believe that the metal detectors are actually making our school safer. It’s unfortunate that ANY school in our country needs them but having them makes Adams safer and I actually thought that we were already a safe environment for our students and staff. We are made safer by being able to have checkpoints at our entryways to actually examine what students/visitors are bringing into the school. Metal detectors actually add another layer of safety because they also deter students from bringing weapons or anything that they shouldn’t have. The word has gotten out that we have the weapons detectors and people understand that they will be checked at the door.“
Q: What can students do to keep the building safe?
A: “Aside from not bringing weapons to school or engaging in violent behavior themselves, the best thing that a student can do to help keep JA a safe space is to report anything that is suspicious or that you feel can lead to harm. If you see something, say something. This includes any unsettling social media behavior as well. Make sure you let an administrator, a member of our campus safety(security) team or any other trusted adult in the building know what you have seen or heard. Our students are already doing an amazing job in this area. Also, remember that students are not allowed to open the door for anyone and let them into the building. Even if you know the person they must enter the building through the assigned doors and using the established system of going through the detectors.”
Q: How will the new safety policies, including the new fire drill procedure, affect students?
A: Regarding fire drills, it is a bit challenging because 2,000 students are exiting the building and coming back in. If classes stay together while in assigned areas and re-enter at the same time, there should not be a problem. Stragglers and those who come in after their classes have already re-entered will likely be put through the weapons detectors. Campus safety, administrators, teachers AND students will have to be aware of anyone trying to enter the building that had not previously been in the building or someone that doesn’t belong at Adams. This is a piece that we are still working through but, great question.
Q: Is there anything else students should know?
A: We want students to know that Adams is a safe environment and safety continues to be the number 1 priority. The adults in the building are committed to your safety and the students must continue to be vigilant in helping us keep them safe. We appreciate your flexibility and willingness to work with us these last few weeks and the process will get smoother…..but it is necessary. You guys have been amazing and GO EAGLES!
Other important information to note is, students should only enter through door 20 and 1. Door 20 will be locked after 8:30, report straight to door 1. Don’t open a door for anyone trying to get into the school. If you see something say something, your voice could save a life.
