My time at The Tower began during my junior year. At the time, newspaper class was offered only to juniors and seniors. I do have a complaint about this, as I wish that I could have been a part of The Tower for all four years of my high school career.
The newspaper, along with my teachers Mr. Nowicki and Ms. Taylor, has taught me so much about journalism and writing as a whole. No matter how burnt out with school I would inevitably become throughout my two final years of high school, I could always focus my energy on writing. One of the best things about writing for The Tower is how much creative freedom is allotted to the reporters. I have written a wide variety of articles, everything from politics to Taylor Swift to senior spotlights, and I would never have been able to cover so many topics without the freedom allowed to me. With such allowed candor, I could write articles on subject matter that I was passionate about, giving me the ability to fall into a flow state when typing.
This past year, moving up to my role as a Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Tower, I have seen such progress being made in terms of the variation of articles being published and much more Instagram content being posted. I have thoroughly enjoyed the mutually beneficial relationships that my editing the articles of my fellow reporters, as I learn from their writing and they learn from my editing.
After my bittersweet graduation in June, I will be moving on to higher education at Indiana University at Bloomington, with a current chosen major in Journalism (news reporting and editing). I can confidently say that without The Tower, I would be lost in my decision of what to study in college, as this newspaper has fostered my love for writing like nothing ever has before. As a young child, I would write creative short stories and read as much as I could, and this passion has translated into my love of journalism. Thank you to The Tower for helping me grow. And to incoming reporters, never forget to try new things to find out what you truly aspire to do with your life.
Signing off,
Adelyn Rabbitt (Former Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Tower)
