“Bryant makes the play, it’s over! And the [Chicago] Cubs have finally won it all!” This is the final line of commentary of game seven of the 2016 World Series. For the first time in 108 years, the Cubs had claimed THE postseason W.
Here we are, eight years later, 2024, and it’s almost time for them to make that run again as no one wants to wait another 100 years to experience the thrill of a Cubbie postseason crown. With approximately three weeks until opening day, it’s time to take a look at this year’s team and see if they are capable of a World Series bid. The Chicago Cubs lead the league in number of prospects on the top 100 list. From outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to second baseman James Triantos, it’s safe to say that Chicago has what some might consider a ‘stacked’ roster in the works.
Those promoted to the Wrigley infield include third baseman Michael Busch, shortstop Matt Shaw, and second baseman James Triantos. Ready to dominate the outfield in Chicago blue are Pete Crow-Armstrong, Owen Caissie, and Kevin Alcántara. Finally, the top 100 Cubs prospect that has taken control of the mound throughout his minor league career, right-hander, Cade Horton, is ready to continue said mound control in the majors.
The Cubs finished the 2023 regular season with a 83-79 record. Some standout players of the season were Cody Bellinger, Nico Hoerner, Seiya Suzuki, and Christopher Morel. Despite being profiled as an outfielder, Bellinger moved up to first base after the All-Star break and showed much potential. Nico Hoerner received the Gold Glove award for his performance at the second base position. Seiya Suzuki had a batting average of .355 in 47 games last season (which is pretty good). Morel went 96-388 in 107 games in 2023. The man can hit, what else can be said?
Another important piece of news is that this season the Chicago Cubs team is under new management. For the last 3 years, former Cubs’ catcher David Ross was in charge of all Chicago team operations. In the offseason between 2023 and 2024, the organization decided to relieve Ross’ position for former Diamondbacks second baseman Craig Counsell. Counsell is also a graduate of the University of Notre Dame , class of 1992. Counsell signed a five-year, $40 million dollar contract, making him the highest paid manager in the league.
With all the crazy talent on the way to Chicago via players and management, the question is, will this all actually aid the Cubs to do something when the time is right? Well, as of March 18, the team has a spring training record of 14-7-2 with 9 games to go before Opening Day. Although spring training games don’t necessarily matter in the long run, it’s a good gauge of how the prospects play with the veterans. That being said, can’t wait to see how the season goes and if the boys can bring it home. Ari out.
