Taylor Swift made history at this year’s Grammys by becoming the first person to win ‘Album of the Year’ four times. She received this award for her 2022 album, Midnights, as well as ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ for this same album. After winning ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’, Swift announced her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, during her speech. As this new album is set to come out in two months, Swifties are beyond excited. Taking home her first ever Grammy awards, Miley Cyrus won ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’ for “Flowers”, which she also performed at the award show. Billie Eilish added to her impressive collection of Grammys after taking home ‘Song of the Year’ for “What Was I Made For?” [From the Motion Picture Barbie]. Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell performed this award-winning hit together during the show. Taking home the most awards this year was alternative artist Phoebe Bridgers, with four total wins out of her seven nominations. Three of these awards were won by her and her band, boygenius, winning the ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ category for their 2023 album, the record, as well as ‘Best Rock Song’ and ‘Best Rock Performance’ for their hit single, “Not Strong Enough”. Bridgers also took home the award for ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ for her part in “Ghost in the Machine” by SZA.
Regardless of producing some of the most anticipated pop albums of 2023, neither Lana Del Rey nor Olivia Rodrigo won any Grammys for their 2023 albums, despite the numerous nominations that both artists received. Nominated for awards such as ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Best Alternative Music Album’, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean BLVD by Lana Del Rey received zero wins, alongside specific songs from the album that were nominated. Similarly, GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo was nominated for awards such as ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’. Fans of both Lana and Olivia are upset over the lack of appreciation and recognition for both albums at this year’s awards. With this being said, this year’s Grammys were chock-full of incredible performances by talented artists, and averaged almost 17 million viewers.
