Guinevere Clark, known by her friends as Gwen, is a fun, intelligent and kindhearted member of the John Adams community. In her time at Adams, Gwen has built up quite the resumé. She is an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidate and active member of the school’s environmental club, Eagles Going Green, and John Adams Volunteer Association. She takes on leadership roles as the secretary of the National Honor Society (NHS,) officer for the Spanish Honor Society and vice president of the American Sign Language Club. Prior to Adams, Gwen attended Kennedy for elementary and Lasalle middle school.
At age six, Gwen began gymnastics with Elite Sports Academy, a pastime which quickly grew into her main extracurricular activity. Though it is a significant part of her current life, gymnastics has also contributed to Gwen’s future goals: “I want to become a doctor and specialize in the spine because I broke my spine.” Gwen’s injury came at age 14 while doing gymnastics. It was very difficult to find a doctor who would treat her injury without immediately jumping to surgery, which inspired Gwen to pursue medicine and become the type of doctor that she wishes she had.
Outside of school activities and training, Gwen coaches gymnastics and has her own babysitting business, filling out her both highly demanding and rewarding schedule.
When asked about her time at Adams, Gwen said that some of her favorite moments were “induction nights or NHS events—things where you give back to the community. There’s also just something I like about being in the school at night, [such as] for Magnet Night.” Gwen’s advice for underclassmen is to “get involved, work hard, but be understanding and gentle with yourself if you don’t achieve everything. Learn for the sake of learning, not for grades.” She went on to remark that “the work always gets done. Stress is your friend, depression is your enemy; sometimes they work together. Trust no one.” At the end of the interview she jokingly shared that her sense of humor is “broken because of full IB.”
Gwen plans to attend Indiana University Bloomington this fall after graduation, studying biology at the college of arts and sciences.
