Edith Fuentes is a kind and intelligent senior at John Adams High School. She is an active member of the Adams community and a partial International Baccalaureate student.
Edith participates in many extracurricular activities, both inside and outside of school. In school, she holds a leadership role in the International Student Organization as the Director of Communications. In her time outside of school, she dances in the South Bend Tierra Viva Mexican Folkloric Dance Group, which she has been a part of for three years. She participates in the Notre Dame Upward Bound Program after school, which is a time of college preparation through instruction and tutoring for high school students. Finally, she volunteers at South Bend’s Meow Mission, a non-profit organization that transports, spays or neuters, and returns free-roaming cats in Saint Joseph county. There she gives her time to make sure that the feline community of South Bend is treated humanely.
Edith’s top two favorite teachers from her four years at John Adams High School are Mrs. Worsham and Mr. Marquez. She has been in Mrs. Worsham’s photography class since sophomore year, and Edith describes Mrs. Worsham as “very sweet,” “nice,” and “a person with a warm atmosphere that I don’t feel with other teachers.” Edith comments, “As a kid I loved taking pictures of anything with my iPad, and I even used my toys like my Shopkins or my own pets as models. This class, thanks to Mrs. Worsham, has definitely sparked my love for photography that I used to have as a kid, and I love photography so much.” Secondly, Edith appreciates Mr. Marquez because he is reliable, not only for school advice but also for life advice. Edith has had him as a teacher since her freshman year, and he made the Google Meet classes during COVID year less painful and more fun for her, creating an environment that encouraged learning even over the internet. Edith comments, “I’d also say he’s a favorite because as a Latina, it’s inspiring to learn from him and know his journey and what he’s been through as a Latino here in the United States. His story and persona as a teacher inspire me to strive for the education that I want and lets me know that if he can do it, I can also do it.”
Edith recalls some of her favorite memories from her time of being in high school. To begin, her quinceañera stands out to her as an experience that has shaped her into the person she is today. Edith commented, “I joined Mexican Folk Dancing soon before my quinceañera and I have loved it ever since then! I also performed a dance at my quince!” Her quince also helped her connect further with her cousins and her friends, making her relationships stronger. Throughout high school, she has made multiple meaningful memories with her friends Tobi, Robi, and Jeremy. A highlight of their friendship is “when we went bowling and we then walked in 10 degrees all the way to Buffalo Wild Wings, which was like a 10-minute walk. I was freezing so bad, but it’s such a fun memory to think about.” Finally, Edith recollects, “Of course a cliche favorite high school memory of mine is going to prom. Tobi was my date, and we went with a group of my other great friends. My favorite thing about that night was ending it by singing Taylor Swift with Tobi!”
After high school, Edith is excited to receive further education at either Purdue University or Indiana University at Bloomington. She is interested in majoring in Animal Sciences, Biology, or Zoology. Afterward, she hopes to move on from college and become a veterinarian.
The Tower wishes Edith an amazing rest of her senior year and success in her future endeavors!
