High School Hockey is back, and the ISHSHA (Indiana State High School Hockey Association) is seeing its first games of the season. The John Adams Hockey program opened their campaign on Saturday, Oct. 14, with a 0-5 loss to LSJ (Lakeshore Saint Joseph). The following week, the Eagles suffered a 2-4 defeat to Saint Joseph (South Bend). The Tower reached out to Assistant Captain Saul Zabukovic, a senior in his fourth year with the team, for some insight on the team and their performances.
When asked about what the team struggled with, Zabukovic shared: “Our chemistry wasn’t there yet, and we didn’t really stick to our systems at times and it led to breakdowns where they capitalized.” And things didn’t improve after the early mistakes: “Once we were down we were short fused which led to more slip ups.”
Despite the box scores, there were some important silver linings for the team. “We outshot LSJ which is a big plus, and our penalty kill was 100%.” The team is still establishing its new identity after the loss of key players last season, including the entire goalkeeper corps. Junior Ryan Brown has taken on the responsibilities in net, playing only his third ever high school game against Saint Joe. Additionally, the offense was able to score its first two goals of the season through Mason Zimmerman and David Hornback in the matchup with Saint Joe. The team has a long season ahead of them to find their form, and Zabukovic remains optimistic that they can leave the disappointing start behind them.
