On Oct. 14, 2022, The 1975 released their fifth studio album, “Being Funny In a Foreign Language”. After its release, the album reached number one on the charts in the UK, Ireland, and Australia. This number one spot in the UK is the band’s fifth consecutive UK number one album. Since releasing the album, the band has gone on their “At Their Very Best” tour, further increasing streams for “Being Funny In a Foreign Language” as well as the band’s popularity. After being out for a year, there are some clear fan-favorites on the album:
- “About You”: With 214,924,134 streams currently on Spotify, “About You” was confirmed by lead singer of The 1975, Matty Healy, to be a continuation of the band’s 2013 single, “Robbers”. With soft violin that quickly turns into prominent drums and guitar, “About You” hauntingly paints a picture of greatly missing an old relationship. With the captivating bridge sung by Carly Holt-Hann, wife of The 1975 guitarist Adam Hann, the song quickly became the most popular on the album.
- “I’m In Love With You”: With the combination of the enthralling music video and dance-inducing beats, “I’m In Love With You” is easily one of the top three most popular songs on “Being Funny In a Foreign Language”, with 105,241,911 current streams. Contrasting with “About You”, this song celebrates current love and the happiness associated with it. As a continuation of the music video for the 2016 song “A Change of Heart”, the music video for “I’m In Love With You” is seen to receive the happy ending that the video for “A Change of Heart” lacked. With 11 million views on YouTube “I’m In Love With You” takes its place undoubtedly as one of the most popular songs on the album.
- “Oh Caroline”: Totaling 60,227,839 streams, “Oh Caroline” is another song about an ended relationship. While confirmed by the band not to be about a specific person, the song alludes to regretting the termination of a break up, and wanting that person back. With angelic vocals by Healy and fellow band mates, “Oh Caroline” is a clear favorite by not only fans, but also Matty’s father, Tim Healy, whose vocals were featured on The 1975’s 2020 song, “Don’t Worry”.
Over the course of a year, “Being Funny In a Foreign Language” has helped grow The 1975’s popularity immensely. Recently, Matty Healy has announced a tour hiatus for the band, giving them a deserved break from consistently being on tour, as well as the opportunity to work on their up-and-coming sixth studio album.
