Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, The Couple That Broke The Internet

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce need no introduction. Superstars on their own, they may have just become the power couple of the century.

The pair practically broke the internet after Swift made an appearance at Kelce’s game on September 24 as the Chiefs took on the Bears at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Although rumors had been circling about the two being in a relationship, nothing was confirmed until Swift arrived in the Chiefs family suite and sat alongside Brittany Mahomes, spouse of Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and Kelce’s mother, Donna. At that point, It was practically impossible to scroll on any social media platform or news source without seeing a mention of Kelce and Swift. There was even a trend on TikTok where people would say that Swift had put Kelce, the two-time Super Bowl winner and eight-time NFL Pro Bowler, on the map. To go along with the TikTok trend, Kelce’s jersey saw a 400% increase in sales and he has gained over 1.1 million followers on Instagram.

The idea of this relationship was sparked on the podcast “New Heights” hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, which was released on July 26th of this year. Kelce shared his disappointment at not being able to give Swift a friendship bracelet at her ‘The Eras Tour’ show he attended at Arrowhead Stadium. He also included the detail that his number was written out on the beads. While many fans enjoyed the idea of a Swift-Kelce relationship, it did not seem that anything serious would come of it.

Then on September 21st, Kelce made an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” and when questioned about their relationship, he stated: “I threw it out there; I threw the ball in her court, and ya know, I told her, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead. You might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead.’ ” This again created a buzz about the possibility of something between the two, but nobody would have thought it would be only three days later that Swift would be spotted at the game and subsequently break the internet.

She was once again in attendance the following weekend as the Chiefs traveled to play the New York Jets for Sunday Night Football. Her attendance was consistently made known by NBC, who showed Swift over 17 times throughout the game. Along with that, NBC saw a dramatic increase in viewers, the game being the most watched Sunday show this year (since the Super Bowl) and the most watched NFL regular-season game ever. Viewers watching on Youtube TV may have noticed that even the pause symbol was changed to the “heart hands” emoji, Swift’s signature gesture. While there is no doubt about the impact the Swift-Kelce relationship has had on both them and the NFL, Kelce also acknowledged that the publicity has been a lot to handle, but he recognizes that it is just something that comes with such a sensational relationship.

After missing last Sunday’s game against the Vikings, Swift was present for Thursday Night Football action when the Chiefs took on the Broncos, bringing Swifties and NFL fans together again like no one in their wildest dreams ever imagined. But we know all too well, by the end of the season they may never ever get back together, or we may witness a bigger Super Bowl story that has them driving off in a getaway car.

Sofia Nevala is a Senior at John Adams High School and is very excited to be back contributing to The Tower this year as the Sports Editor. Sofia is looking forward to casting a bigger spotlight on local sports, including those at Adams and Notre Dame, through her work at The Tower. She is also looking forward to continuing to write, what some may consider, too many articles about the NHL. A lacrosse player for the South Bend Bears girls’ team, she also enjoys reading, traveling, going to concerts and watching various sports. Sofia can be found at almost every one of Notre Dame’s home hockey games or at the Ice Box watching her brother play for Adams. Along with that, she is up at 9 a.m. every Saturday in the fall watching her favorite show “College GameDay” on ESPN. Some of her greatest accomplishments include: growing her hockey jersey collection to sixteen, helping start the South Bend Bears High School girls lacrosse team, and learning to play piano at the age of four along with violin in the first grade. She loves all music and is constantly, to the annoyance of her brother, singing along to the radio in the car. She learned to read music during her years of taking piano and violin lessons, which was a great help as she taught herself to play ukulele during COVID. She is an unapologetic country music fan though she gets much criticism for it from her friends. She believes there aren’t many things better than blasting country music in the car with the windows down. After high school, Sofia hopes to move on to college and study Kinesiology or Movement Science; something that will lead her on the Physical Therapy track…one of the only health majors that has little involvement with blood! Her ultimate goal is to get a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, which would give her an opportunity to work in professional sports, preferably in a big city. Between now and getting her Doctorate, Sofia will continue to grow her hockey jersey collection, try to convince her parents that she needs to go to another concert, and receive way too many ESPN notifications on her phone. Sofia is excited for her final year with The Tower and hopes that she can continue to share her love of sports with the Adams community.
