This fall, the John Adams girls golf team concluded their season by participating in the IHSAA regional tournament on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023 at Sandy Pines Golf Club in DeMotte, Indiana. After missing out on regionals last year the Eagles made their return to the event with three members: junior Kathrine Swain and seniors Audrey Fremeau and Kamryn Dubie. Swain shot a team-best 92, Fremeau carded a 110 and Dubie rounded out the team scoring with a 143.
Led by senior co-captains Fremeau and Joie Warnke, the team saw improvement and success this season, winning five matches and leading Adams to finish tied for fourth in the Northern Indiana Conference(NIC) overall standings. Thanks to wins against Riley and Bremen amongst others, the team also earned fifth place at the NIC tournament. The Eagles advanced to regionals after a third place finish at sectionals, where five members of the team played. Swain again led the team with a 90, while Warnke shot a 106, Dubie a 113, Fremeau a 121 and junior Sophia Yoder a 132. This performance enabled the Eagles to participate in regionals for the second time in three years, with three members of the team qualifying. However, without five players, they could not place as a team and none scored well enough to advance to the state finals. This year, the team had three participants in the regionals, which was an improvement from last year.
When asked about the season, four-year member of the golf team and co-captain Fremeau had this to say:“ We had a great season and exceeded our own expectations by advancing to regionals.” Fremeau partially credits this year’s improvement and success to having players that have grown stronger in their golf game after having a year of experience. She also gives credit to the increased number of practices which she feels led to playing more consistently as a team and individually.
Despite the season having ended, the team is proud of their accomplishments and can look forward to next year where they will have veteran members of the team ready to make another run at regionals, and hopefully beyond.
